Reading
Comprehension:  In the past week, we created charts to help determine the genre of text we read: fiction or non-fiction.  This week, we are exploring the differences in how you retell each kind of text.  Fiction is usually told in sequence order, noting the problem and solution.  Non-fiction or informational text is usually retold be stating the main idea and supporting details.  Ask your child to determine the genre of texts you read and explain how he/she knows.  Then, practice retelling.
Learning Targets:  I can identify fiction and informational text.  I can retell fiction and informational text.
Phonics:   We are very proud of our beginning decoding skills.   We have been practicing using sounds flexibly (long and short vowel sounds), thinking about the meaning of words and text and making accurate decisions to read new words.  Please continue to work on sight words by writing them in meaningful sentences.
Learning Target:  I can flip the vowel to help me read new words.
Words to practice & review:  make, play, said, good, like, and, the, see, we, a, to, come, me, with, my, you, what, are, now, is, find, this, will, be, go, for, how

Writing
During Writing Workshop this week, we are working to write a well-craft paragraph that includes an introductory sentence, details and a closing.  We will be using our shared experiences at school as sources of ideas, so we can help add ideas and edit for each other.  You can mirror this process at home using family activities as the inspiration.

Keep working on letter formation.  Many children are beginning letters at the bottom, and we are working hard to bread this negative habit!

Investigations
Theodor Seuss Geisel was an American writer and cartoonist. He was most widely known for his children's books, which he wrote and illustrated under the pseudonym Dr. Seuss.
Geisel published 46 children's books, often characterized by imaginative characters, rhyme, and frequent use of anapestic meter. His most-celebrated books include the bestselling Green Eggs and Ham, The Cat in the Hat, The Lorax, One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins, Fox in Socks, The King's Stilts, Hop on Pop, Thidwick the Big-Hearted Moose, Horton Hatches the Egg, Horton Hears a Who!, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas!. His works have spawned numerous adaptations, including 11 television specials, four feature films, a Broadway musical and four television series.
He was a perfectionist in his work and would sometimes spend up to a year on a book. It was not uncommon for him to throw out 95% of his material until he settled on a theme for his book. For a writer he was unusual in that he preferred to be paid only after he finished his work rather than in advance.[4]
Geisel's birthday, March 2, has been adopted as the annual date for National Read Across America Day, an initiative on reading created by the National Education Association.

Reminders
Supplies Needed
We are in need of a few supplies for your children.  We are beginning Reading Response Journals, and each child will need a 1-inch 3-ring binder.  Please send a binder for your child as soon as possible labeled (inside) with his/her name.  If you are able please send in an extra binder for a child in need, would be much appreciated too!  We are also in need of large pink erasers.
Conferences
Your conference time was sent home today.  Please complete and sign the bottom half of the form and return it as by Thursday 2/19.  Be sure to neatly write your child’s name on the form.
Please put names on all papers!
We have been receiving some reading logs and other items with no names.  Students empty their own folders each day into turn-in baskets.  Without clearly written names, we are not able to find the owners of the papers.

Math

We are continuing to work on mastering our facts thru 5. Daily practice is the best way. Make flashcards, play memory with the problem matching the sum, use dominoes to write and solve equations, online addition games are also a great way to learn and practice the facts.
