Reading
Comprehension:   This week we will continue to work on retelling stories.  Practice at home by asking your Kindergartner to retell one of the stories we read each day.
Phonics:   We are working on using letter sounds to sound out new words when reading and writing.  Keep writing sentences every day to use letter sounds.

Letters & Sounds to be mastered: All letters should be easily identified at this time.  All consonant sounds should also be recognized and produced.
Sight words this week:  with, my, you, what, are, now

Writing
We are writing complete sentences this week.  This week, we will be peer editing to check for who the sentence is about (subject) and what they are doing (action).  Make up some sentences and non-sentences and ask your child to determine if it is a complete sentence.

Math
Children are learning to see numbers 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 as having a 5 and some more. This is called using a 5-group. This visual pattern will help children add, subtract, and understand numbers. It will also help later in multidigit calculation.

Count things at home in 5-groups to help your child see the 5 in 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10. For example, 7 buttons can be counted using 5-groups: “5 and 2 make 7.”

Children will see 5-groups in materials they are using in school:

Questions to Ask Your Child to Spark Conversations
What do you think it was like at the first Thanksgiving?
What is a balance point?
What letters would you use to write dream?
What do you do during Read With Others?
What do you like to do during Math Stations?

Other News, Notes and Reminders
Thanksgiving Feast:  We will be enjoying a Thanksgiving Feast on Tuesday, Nov 25th.  Each child will need to bring following items during the week of November 17-21.  Mrs. Conran and Mrs. Caya are supplying the turkeys.  If you have questions or concerns about your items, please ask your classroom teacher.  We will need lots of helpers on this day to serve the meal and clean up afterwards.   The times will be 10am – 12:30pm.  Please let us know if you can help.
