Reading
Our focus letter for this week is Tt.  When we work on a letter we learn how to recognize it, how to write it correctly, how to produce the sound and how to use the sound to write new words.  So far, we have worked on Ss and Mm.  Please continue to work on writing these letters correctly.  We are breaking some habits of poor formation.  Check the middle pages of your child’s folder for proper letter formation.
Learning Target:  I can name Tt and make its sound.
We have introduced the idea of schema.  Schema refers to a reader’s background knowledge.  Please use the following sentence starters to talk with your child about stories you read together:
That reminds me of…,  I remember a time…., That’s just like…
Learning Target:  I can use my schema to understand what I read.

Writing
Writing is a major part of Kindergarten.  We write every day and share our writing with others for feedback routinely.  This is a challenging skill, and parents can support their Kindergartners at home with a simple daily routine.  Each evening ask your child to tell you one thing about the day.  Try to keep it to one sentence.  Repeat the sentence back to your child.  Work together to write the sentence.  At this time of year, your child should be able to write and spell our sight words and use beginning and maybe ending sounds for unknown words.  If you do this daily (or even just 4 days each week), you will see amazing results!  Happy Writing!
Learning Target:  I can use beginning sounds to write new words.

Investigations

We are continuing our learning on neighborhoods with learning about community helpers.   Next week, we will focus on learning what community helpers are and give special attention to firefighters.
We will continue our learning about trees by looking at different types of wood.  We will compare and describe the characteristics of different types of wood.
Learning Target:  I can describe the role of community helpers.

Questions to Ask Your Child to Spark Conversations
What are the three most interesting things about you?

Name five reasons you’re glad that you are you.
If you could have any super power, what would it be and why?
What’s your favorite song?  Why?

What do you want to be when you grow up? Why?

What’s your favorite movie?  Why?
What community helper would you like to be?

Math
This week in math we will be comparing numbers using counters. We will be talking about which number is bigger/smaller. When lined up, which is longer/shorter… Our goal is that all students can write their numbers from 0-10. We will begin to learn how to make the numbers correctly.
Remember to count with your child daily. Counting by 1s to 100, by 10s to 100, and
backwards 20-0.

Learning Target: I can write numbers.
