Reading
Comprehension: This week we are working on having deeper
discussions about books we read. We will
practice thinking aloud about what connections and questions we have during
reading. You can support comprehension skills at home
by having conversations before, during and after reading.
Phonics: Writing unknown words can be daunting for
new writers. Practice sounding out 1-2
words everyday. Also support your child
by dictating simple sentences, and let them experiment with letters and sounds
as they record what you say.

Writing
We are working on writing sentences on a topic. At this time, your child should be able to
write 3-4 sentences on a topic that can be read by an adult.
Additionally, we are focusing on NEAT handwriting. Many students needs extra practice forming
letters correctly and slowly down to write neatly. Please look at your child’s papers together
and have a conversation about handwriting.
We often remind students that others can only enjoy their writing if
they can read it. Sloppy handwriting
means that others cannot read your good ideas.
Investigations
We enjoyed our many Balance and Motion experiments. We learning how things roll, twirl and
spin. Ask your Kindergartner about
friction, rotation and air resistance.
This week, we are learning about winter weather. We will be reading classic stories and
creating visual representations of snowy scenes. We will also learn how to mark weather data
in graphs and observe and record the changes trees experience in the winter
months.
Reminders
Field Trip
On the homework today, your
child has a permission trip for a February 23rd field trip to see
Seussical. The cost for the trip is
$4. Please return the slip and payment
as soon as possible.
Be prepared for Recess
Please be sure your child has
outdoor clothing suited to the weather.
Students should have warm coats and mittens daily. If you child wears boots to school, they MUST
have shoes to wear during the day.
