Nov 1   October Reading Logs Are Due!

Reading
Comprehension:  We are continuing to work on listening attentively to books and remember the sequence of the story and the important details.  You can practice at home by discussing and retelling the books you read.
Comprehension Learning Target:  I can use my schema to talk to others about my understanding.
Phonics:  Our classes celebrate learning every month by honoring students who meet specific goals.  In Nov., we will honor students who can identify all capital and lowercase letters consistently by Nov. 14.  Keep practicing everyday!
Phonics Learning Target:  I can identify letters and produce their sounds.
I can read sight words:  I, and, the, like, see, we, a, to, come, me

Writing
Practice writing with your child regularly.  Writing is a terrific family activity.  You can write true stories about things you have done together or get creative and write made-up stories.   Often Kindergartners lack confidence when it comes to writing, so writing at home will provide the extra guided practice to help your child find their inner author.

Learning Target:  I can write to tell a story.

Math

For math we are continuing our work with counting, number writing, matching numeral/labeling how many objects are in a group. We will continue to work with the following shapes:  circle, square, rectangle, triangle, hexagon. When talking about them remember to have your child use the terms: straight edges, corners (vertices), angles, slant, no straight edges, flat, 2-dimensional.

Math Learning Target:  I can name and describe 2D shapes: circle, square, triangle, rectangle, and hexagon.

Questions to Ask Your Child to Spark Conversations
Tell me the wildest story you can think of.
Which letter sounds do you think are the trickiest?
Which number do you think is the hardest to write.
If you could do anywhere, where would you go?

Other News, Notes and Reminders
St. Catherine’s Commons Costume Parade:  On Wednesday, October 29, students will take a walking field trip for a costume parade. If you volunteered to chaperone, you are welcome.  Please arrive at 1:20pm to help students put costumes on.  Remember costumes should not be worn to school.  We will change in the afternoon.  All costumes should fit over your child’s clothes. We are unable to put makeup on. Please send a bag for collecting candy.
Guided Reading:  No Guided Reading books this week due to the quarter end.
Thanksgiving Feast:  We will be enjoying a Thanksgiving Feast on Monday, November 24th.  Each child will need to bring following items during the week of November 17-21.  Mrs. Conran and Mrs. Caya are supplying the turkeys.  If you have questions or concerns about your items, please ask your classroom teacher.  We will need lots of helpers on this day to serve the meal and clean up afterwards.   The times will be 10am – 12:30pm.  Please let us know if you can help.
