Reading
Comprehension: For the next several weeks, we will be
working on retelling familiar stories.
Phonics: We have a wide range of expertise with
letters, sounds and words at this time.
Students have many opportunities to work at their own levels in this
area. To help you understand the order
of learning, students usually become word masters in this order:
·
identifying letters by naming them when they are
show in random order (52 letter plus typeset g and a)
·
producing correct letter sounds when shown a
letter
·
using beginning sounds of words to make
decisions or label
·
using letter sounds to read and write new words
You can support your child through these levels with extra
practice at home that fits your child’s needs.
Letters & Sounds to be mastered: I can identify G, g, g and make the hard /g/ sound. I can identify R, r and make the /r/
sound. All letters should be mastered
within the next two weeks. All letter
sounds (consonants and short vowels should be mastered by Dec. 4.
Sight words to be mastered:
with, my, you, what, are, now
Writing
We are continuing to work on writing narrative stories. Our goal for November is to write 3-sentence
stories with a beginning, middle and end.
Here is an example using sound spelling:
I went
to see my granma. We mad cookes. We had fun.
Learning Target: I can write a narrative using sound spelling.
Investigations
Balance
and Motion is the new unit we are studying in science. We will be studying the
motion of objects, including vibrations and sound. We will be observing and
comparing how objects balance, spin, and roll, and communicating orally and in
writing the things we discover. The processes of observing, communicating, and
comparing are important thinking processes that your child will be using during
our investigation of motion. We will start by learning metric linear
measurement. We’ll explore the need for standard units, and work with the
metric units and tools used by scientists worldwide.
Our
goal is that the metric concepts will have their own frame of reference in your
child’s mind, and that in time he or she will think metric. For example, the
meter is about the distance from the floor to a typical
doorknob. A pinkie finger on a small person is about 1 cm wide. Your child may be
interested in trying some things at home. You might want to tie a string
between two chairs and see how many paper cups, craft sticks, and other objects
you can balance (use clothespins for counterweights). You could make a big
mobile by suspending a broomstick and hanging things from it, or make spinning
tops out of shafts and disks. Check your local toy store for tops and other spinners.
The possibilities are endless, and your child can be your guide. We’re looking
forward to our new unit on balance and motion to provide lots of learning and
lots of fun!
Other News, Notes and Reminders
Thanksgiving
Feast: We will be enjoying a Thanksgiving Feast on Monday, November 24th. Each child will need to bring following items
during the week of November 17-21. Mrs.
Conran and Mrs. Caya are supplying the turkeys.
If you have questions or concerns about your items, please ask your classroom
teacher. We will need lots of helpers on
this day to serve the meal and clean up afterwards. The times will be 10am – 12:30pm. Please let us know if you can help.
